It all started with an insy winsy teeny mojito.
Story time! My 21st birthday story time!
Did you know my first legal alcoholic beverage was a mojito.
Yup. It was.
My best friend, Alex, yelled back at me from the sea of people in line at the bar “what do you want?”. Don’t get me wrong I had a beverage or two before turning the sacred age but in that time and moment that question made me look like a little puppy dog. I had just gotten carded successfully for the first time and the world was my oyster. I knew I hated beer so what the hell was I to order?! Cranberry vodka?! Nah this was my birthday! I was 21! And my 18-19-20 year old days of cranberry vodkas were over!
So I blurted out MOJITO.
Standing at a bar legally for the first time in a crowd of veteran bar goers was not so much intimidating but sooooo intense. People are shoving, beers are being spilt on your brand new wedges that you bought for the night and you feel light headed just being in the thick of it. Now I look at the little ones at a bar and just think, don’t worry, this too shall pass.

We were celebrating my 21st at Barney’s Beanery in Old Town Pasadena.
“Mojito! I’ll have a mojito!”. Was for some reason the first thing that came to mind. There I was freshly 21, and slurping down my first mojito in the largest dive-y sports bar around. Barney’s is like three stories, two maybe!? I definitely couldn’t tell you how many that night. I had many more mojitos and may have even blared some Britney Spears and Spice Girls at the karaoke machine as the night went on.
Your perspective really changes of the universe after your first real night out. People suddenly become very animalistic and there is whole new liquor filled world that is out there.
I love telling first stories to my blog readers. Whether you’re in your twenties or in your fifties you can instantly think back to your 21st . Or maybe you aren’t 21 yet and you’re wondering what it will look like. If you’ve got a killer 21st story I would love to hear about it in the comments and I’m sure everyone else would too!
Now at 24 I think I prefer having a mojito on a patio near a pool but I still go back to Barney’s every once in a while 😉 and I always think about that mojito. In the years following I have realized how delicious a mojito can be. It seriously is so easy on the calories and crisp in flavor. It remained one of my favorites for multiple reasons. Enjoy this cucumber mojito recipe below! It is PERF for an at home spa day. Just remember to reserve two cucumber slices for your face mask 😉
