These California Avocado Bacon Burgers are a direct blast from my childhood summer past. There wasn’t a family bbq that went by where someone wasn’t whipping up a California style burger. You see, growing up in Southern California, having avocado on your burger was practically as essential as the bun!
To ensure you’re enjoying locally grown avocados, be sure to check for California on the label from spring through summer!
Why you NEED these Avocado Bacon Burgers at your next BBQ!
They are so fresh and delicious. Topped with fresh ingredients like crispy lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and creamy California Avocado are essential for a California Avocado style burger. You simply cannot skip the avocado! It’s the star of the show when it comes to California burgers!
The crispy bacon and sharp cheddar cheese provide the perfect balance to the fresh toppings of the burger.
Have a round of burgers made in just about 15 minutes! They are easy to cook up and made with simple, pantry staple ingredients. Use good ground chuck beef and an 80/20 blend for an extra juicy burger!
Have all your toppings prepped ahead of time and ready to go once it’s time to cook up the burgers for easy assembly!
Ingredients for the Avocado Burger Patty:
- Good ground beef: I like to use a blend of 80/20 ground beef/fat blend for a really super juicy burger.
- Onion Powder & Garlic Powder: Skip chopping the fresh onion and garlic and opt for an easy spice blend that still gives tons of flavor.
- Egg: I like to use an egg to bind the burgers together for good shape but you can skip this if need be. Just be sure to chill the patties for 20-30 minutes before cooking.
- Salt & Pepper
Toppings for an avocado bacon burger:
- ripe, Fresh California Avocados, 1/4 avocado per burger
- Tomato slices
- Crispy lettuce leaves
- Thin red onion slices
- Crispy Bacon pieces
- Your favorite BBQ sauce
How to make these Avocado Bacon Burgers:
- Prepare and slice your burger toppings, reserving the avocado to cut fresh once burgers are prepared.
- Prepare the patties: In a medium bowl mix together ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Divide beef into four patties and shape into 1” inch patties and about as wide as the burger buns. Make a small indent with your thumb into the center of the patty.
- For stove top burgers: Heat a thin layer of vegetable oil into a heavy bottom cast iron skillet on medium-high heat. Add in the burger patties and sear for 3-5 minutes (with indent side up) on each side or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F. OR For grilled burgers: Grill burgers with indent side up for 3-5 minutes on each side over direct heat or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.
- Add 1 slice of cheese to each burger and melt, cover with either a skillet lid or grill lid and melt cheese for 1-2 minutes.
- Remove burgers and top on a (toasted or untoasted) burger bun. Add 1-2 tbsp of bbq sauce to one half of the bun.
- Top with 1/4 Fresh California Avocado slices, tomato slice, lettuce, red onion, and bacon pieces.
