Extremely Easy Appetizer! These fried sage leaves are super simple to make! The batter comes together in one bowl with pantry staple ingredients and can be shallow-fried in a small pan to cut down on a big pot of hot oil!
An Italian Classic! In Italy, fried sage leaves are a very popular appetizer! We had them at our friends wedding in Florence during the cocktail hour. They were served in a small paper cone and made the most perfect snack pairing for an Aperol Spritz.
Ingredients for fried sage
- all purpose flour
- kosher salt
- cracked black pepper
- club soda
- sage leaves
- vegetable or grape seed oil
- sea salt
A note on your sage leaves!
The bigger, fresh from the garden or Farmers Market sage leaves are the way to go! They will be the most flavorful and fry up the easiest!
How to make fried sage:
- In a medium bowl whisk together flour, salt, and cracked black pepper.
- Whisk in club soda as it streams into the flour.
- Heat a medium skillet with ½ inch of oil on medium-high heat until the oil reaches 350 F. Drop a bit of the batter into the oil, if it bubbles up the oil is ready to go.
- Dip the sage leaves into the batter and into the oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until the leaves are golden brown.
- Transfer leaves to a paper towel lined plate and sprinkle with sea salt while the leaves are still warm.
How to serve them:
I like serving fried sage leaves on a cute little serving platter.
I usually serve them along side other easy snacks like bowls of pistachios and olives to compliment them.
Fried sages leaves are also great on a cheeseboard or antipasto platter.
Can you make them ahead of time?
I would suggest to make these sage leaves the day of, or maximum 1-2 hours before serving for optimum freshness! They are fried, and to ensure premium crispness its best to serve them right out of the fryer.
What to serve with fried sage
Fried sage pairs perfectly with an aperitivo. Serve with wine, beer OR try one of these cocktails for a nice pairing!
