Why You’ll Love This Bite-Sized Charcuterie Appetizer

Charcuterie boards are one of the most popular appetizers because they allow your guests to combine a variety of flavors into one bite. But inevitably, there are ingredients that go to waste because people don’t know how to pair them. Tragically, some people stick with pairing only cheese and crackers because they don’t know the joy of the spreads, meats, fruits, and nuts.

Never fear, I created these charcuterie bites to solve this problem for all of us! I made blue cheese apple bites and Boursin pear bites to get us started, but the options are endless. You simply arrange the ingredients in a phyllo shell so every bite gives you the perfect taste of a charcuterie board.

Boards For Inspiration

Ingredients

phyllo shells, apples, pears, boursin, blue cheese, prosciutto, marcona almonds, walnuts, honey

I know I personally tend to go overboard with buying for a charcuterie board because you never know exactly how much of something your guests are going to eat. These bites make shopping much easier because I’ve measured out and portioned how much you need of each ingredient to make your bites! Here’s what you’ll need for each version:

Blue Cheese Apple Ingredients

  • Blue cheese
  • Prosciutto ribbons
  • Apple butter
  • Glazed pecans
  • Green apple

Boursin Pear Ingredients

  • Boursin cheese
  • Prosciutto ribbons
  • Honey
  • Marcona almonds
  • Red pear triangles

And for both variations, you’ll need Athens Mini Phyllo Shells!

How to Make Charcuterie Bites

Blue Cheese Apple Bite

  • Spread a small bit of blue cheese into the bottom of a phyllo shell.
  • Top it with a small prosciutto ribbon, apple butter, ½ a glazed pecan, and an apple wedge.

Boursin Pear Bite

  • Spread a small bit of Boursin cheese into the bottom of a phyllo shell.
  • Top it with a small prosciutto ribbon, a drizzle of honey, ½ a Marcona almond, and a small red pear triangle.

More Charcuterie Bite Variations

  • If you don’t have phyllo shells, you can make a bite built on top of your favorite cracker. I prefer the shells because they hold the ingredients together if they slip, but a cracker works fine too.
  • Get creative with your drizzles. Use hot honey or balsamic glaze for some variety.
  • If you like a salty parmesan, make that the base of your bite, and then add balsamic glaze for some sweet acidity and top it with a fig or a halved grape.
  • Make a Caprese bite with mozzarella, a piece of basil, and a chunk of tomato, all drizzled with the topping of your choice.
  • Get creative! Use your favorite cheese and then build from that flavor-wise. Whatever you enjoy stacking together on a cheeseboard would make a fantastic charcuterie bite.

FAQs

Can I prepare these appetizers ahead of time?

You can prepare them a few hours before serving and then cover and pop them in the refrigerator until you’re ready. I wouldn’t make them any earlier than that because the apple and pear slices will start to brown and the phyllo shell may start to get soggy.

What should I do with leftovers?

You probably won’t have leftovers because they’re so delicious! These bites go fast! However, you can cover (preferably in an airtight container) and refrigerate them overnight, and then enjoy them the next day for lunch or a snack. I wouldn’t recommend enjoying them on the third day unless you haven’t put the bite together in the shell yet. In that case, go ahead and keep making your bites for as long as your cheese, fruit, and prosciutto last!
