This matcha margarita is as refreshing as it is delicious! The earthy flavors of matcha pair beautifully with a bit of sweetener, Cointreau, and tequila to create a vibrant healthy(ish) cocktail. You can serve this marg with brunch since it has caffeine, or sip on it at a pool party, girl’s night, or whenever the mood strikes – I don’t judge!

Why You’ll Love This Matcha Margarita Recipe

At this point, we all know I’m the (self-proclaimed) margarita queen! I love a classic marg, but building upon that recipe and experimenting with different flavors is one of my favorite things to do. Luckily for us, this matcha margarita is the result of a very successful (and delicious) experiment!

Matcha is one of those ingredients that I’m always itching to use. There’s just so much you can do with it AND it’s good for you. Plus, matcha has nearly as much caffeine as coffee, so you can sip this healthy cocktail for a while before you start to get sleepy!

The satisfying umami (sort of earthy!) flavor of matcha pairs well with a variety of other ingredients, so you can put your chef hat on and conduct some experiments of your own. I got you started with some ideas below, but honestly, you may fall in love with this marg and never dream of another. You can make it in batches or blend it so it’s frozen – it’s completely up to you!

I know this is bold to put out into the ether, but are matcha margaritas the new espresso martinis?!

Matcha Margarita Ingredients

This margarita is simple and delicious. You don’t need a ton of ingredients outside the norm to make it – just make sure you have some matcha powder, of course.

  • Blanco tequila
  • Fresh lime juice
  • Cointreau (or orange liquor)
  • Agave syrup (or honey, simple syrup)
  • Matcha powder

What Kind of Matcha Powder Do I Use?

There are three grades of matcha: ingredient, culinary, and ceremonial. Ceremonial is the type of matcha you’d want to use if you were drinking it straight as tea, so that’s a great option for this margarita. However, ceremonial matcha is quite expensive, and culinary is also a great choice! I would avoid ingredient-grade matcha – that’s more commonly used when baking.

To put it simply, I think culinary grade is your best bet!

FAQs

What other alcohol is good in matcha?

Since matcha has an earthy umami flavor it pairs well with a lot of things. It’d be great with a smokey whiskey, your flavored vodka, or with rum (maybe in a mojito!). Experiment with your favorite flavors to find what best works with your tastebuds.

What does matcha do to you?

Matcha is a super concentrated green tea, so it has tons of antioxidants and is generally very healthy for you in moderation. The only thing it would outwardly “do” to you is give you energy because it is just as caffeinated as coffee.

What can I use my leftover matcha for?

You can bake with it – I’ve made an easy matcha tiramisu before, and it’s delicious in cupcakes. You can also use it to make a latte tomorrow morning, just mix it with a little bit of warm water until it has dissolved and is a loose paste. Then, add it to your favorite milk for a refreshing morning treat. Matcha powder is also great blended into a smoothie!

Variations

  • Rim the glass with tajin or add a bit of jalapeno for a spicy matcha margarita.
  • Use some vanilla chai syrup to make a matcha chai marg.
  • Muddle berries of your choice with the lime juice to infuse the margarita with some fruity flavor.
  • Make it creamy with some Baileys Irish cream – It’ll be like an iced matcha latte!

Serving Suggestions

You can enjoy a matcha margarita at night just like we all love espresso martinis at night – the caffeine doesn’t count, right? However, since this margarita tastes (and looks) so fresh, I think it’d make a great brunch cocktail!
