Strawberry Tequila Sour is a fresh and fruity twist on a classic sour cocktail thanks to whole fresh strawberries. With the option to make it with or without egg white, muddle it all together and rejoice in a tequila lover’s dream!
Why you’ll love tequila sour with strawberries
Elevated and elegant! While I love a classy and clean tequila sour, this strawberry-inspired cocktail takes it to new heights. It’s so easy since all I have to do is pop a few whole fresh strawberries, stems and all, into a cocktail shaker and muddle away.
Pretty in pink! Speaking of muddling, once we muddle and strain the fresh fruit, what we are left with is pure strawberry juice. It adds just the right amount of sweet, fruity flavor and a pleasantly pink hue that takes its flirtatious status up a notch.
Summertime favorite! Besides the classic Aperol spritz and my new favorite Hugo spritz, this is a spring and summertime cocktail for those who love tequila. That special note of tequila shines through, giving way for a whole new meaning to a strawberry margarita.
Ingredients
This strawberry tequila sour recipe requires only 8 ingredients, most of which you probably already have on hand. We will need:
- Whole strawberries
- Egg white
- Tequila
- Lemon juice
- Orange juice
- Simple syrup or agave
- Angostura bitters
- Orange wheel and more strawberries, for garnish
Ingredient substitutions and notes:
- Make sure to use whole fresh strawberries. No need to remove the stem since we are straining the cocktail.
- Egg white is traditional, but you can also use aquafaba or bottled cocktail foam (more on this below!).
- Fresh lemon juice and freshly squeezed orange juice will offer the best flavor.
- The bitters are totally optional. Feel free to omit them if you are not a fan.
How to make
A homemade strawberry tequila cocktail that’s ready before you can say party time — that’s good enough for me! Here’s how to do it:
Muddle strawberries: Add the strawberries to a cocktail shaker and muddle for 10-20 seconds or until the strawberries are smashed and have released their juices.
Dry shake, then wet shake: Add the egg white, tequila, lemon juice, orange juice, simple syrup or agave, and a dash of bitters. Dry shake for 15 seconds. Add ice to the shaker and shake again for another 15-20 seconds.
Garnish and serve: Strain the cocktail into a small chilled glass and garnish with an orange wheel and strawberry.
The cocktail foam
The purpose of the egg white is to create a light, airy, perfectly whipped white foam top. This is achieved through a technique known as dry shake — a classic bartender’s trick that has been done since the 1920s.
If you are concerned about consuming raw egg white, as an alternative to egg white, you can try:
- Replace it with 2 tablespoons of liquid from a can of chickpeas — aka aquafaba.
- Purchase bottled cocktail foam from your local liquor store or Amazon.
Serving suggestions
This strawberry-infused tequila cocktail is flirty and fun — and best served during spring and summer when we want a beverage that is easy to sip amid the warm weather. I love to serve this little guy with fun snacks and treats like:
