Why You’ll Love This Blue Lagoon Cocktail

I love it when I come across a cocktail recipe that is just as beautiful to look at as it is to drink. Say hello to this gorgeous Blue Lagoon Cocktail recipe.

Blue Lagoon Cocktail = Lemonade + Blue Curacao + Vodka

That’s the traditional recipe, but we are taking it up a notch with pineapple juice. It adds a wonderful, smooth, fruity flavor and another level of sweetness.

But the main draw of this beautifully, bright blue cocktail is the color, which comes from Blue Curaçao, the popular island liqueur. It’s totally underrated, so I’m going to start splashing in my drinks more often.

This easy 5-ingredient cocktail is best served in a stem glass surrounded by laughter, fun, and friends!

Blue Lagoon vs Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

A lot of people confuse the Blue Lagoon with a Blue Hawaiian cocktail, which is understandable! The only difference – Blue Lagoon is made with vodka, whereas Blue Hawaiian is made with rum.

While both cocktails contain Blue Curaçao, their flavors are completely different.

Ingredients

titos, curacao, pineapple juice, lemons, cherries, and lemonade

This simple cocktail recipe requires only 5 ingredients – and that’s if you count the ice! Gather together:

  • lemonade
  • pineapple juice
  • blue curacao
  • vodka
  • ice

A Note on Blue Curaçao: It’s a slightly bitter-orange flavored liqueur best known for imparting a light blue color to drinks like the Blue Hawaiian, Blue Bird, and today’s Blue Lagoon. Its unique flavor comes from the peels of the Laraha citrus fruit sourced on the island of Curaçao. Look for it in the cordial section of the liquor store!

How To Make a Blue Lagoon Cocktail

All it takes is two easy steps to achieve the sky-blue colored cocktail of your dreams. Start by adding all your ingredients to a cocktail shaker.

Add in equal parts lemonade and pineapple juice…

…along with the blue curacao, vodka, and 2 handfuls of ice to a cocktail shaker. Shake the drink together until well combined.

which glass to use

Traditionally speaking, a blue lagoon cocktail is served in a highball glass with tons of crushed ice.

But self-expression is beautiful, and so is the beauty and grace of a vintage coupe glass. If you’re not serving it with lots of ice, a coupe or classic V-shaped martini glass would work wonderfully! Many people use a stem or “up” glass because the stem lifts the cocktail away from your hands, preventing it from becoming warm.

Blue Lagoon Mocktail

The blue curacao liquor contains alcohol, but there are quite a few curacao cordial syrups that are alcohol-free and will give your drinks a bright blue color. These are a great option for transforming the blue lagoon (or other drinks) into mocktails.

If you’d like to create a non-alcoholic blue lagoon cocktail, shake together equal parts lemonade, pineapple juice, and curacao syrup, and then strain it into your cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange or lemon slice and a cherry.

Blue Lagoon Cocktail Punch

The recipe today serves one, but I love to serve this to my friends in a large pitcher at parties and BBQs (hello, 4th of July!).

To make it punch-style, multiply the recipe by the number of drinks you need and pour the ingredients in the order listed into a large pitcher. Give it a quick stir and place it in the fridge for a few hours ahead of time.

Note: I would not recommend preparing it right before the party and adding ice, as the ice will end up diluting too much of that fabulous, fruity flavor.

Recipe Variations

This recipe is so simple and delicious, but adding a few extra ingredients from time to time keeps this blue cocktail interesting. You could try:

  • Replacing 1 oz vodka with 1 oz coconut rum
  • Adding a splash of Sprite or club soda on top for a touch of bubbly effervescence
  • Garnishing with edible flowers for an eye-catching, tropical feel

REcipe tips

  • Mix it with or without pineapple juice. I love the extra fruity flavor of a blue lagoon cocktail with pineapple juice, but you can also replace it with more lemonade. The flavor will not be as sweet, but it will still be delicious!
  • Shake until the shaker is cold and frosty. Most bars shake their cocktails for at least 30 seconds, which makes the drink itself ice cold and incorporates just enough water from the ice without diluting the flavor. I always shake until the shaker is cold and frosty. Strain into your favorite glass to prevent it from becoming watered down.
  • Garnish with an orange, lemon, or cherry. An authentic blue lagoon is garnished with an orange or lemon slice to bring out the flavor of the blue curacao. I love the additional pop of color from the cherry, so I say go for one, two or all three!
