Why You’ll Love This Big Batch Bloody Mary Recipe
Some people think of Bloody Marys as a hangover cure, and that’s certainly true, but I think of them more as my go-to brunch drink. Whether I’m hungover or not, I want this spicy tomato-based elixir injected into my veins.
I made a big batch version because when I’m hosting brunch, I want to have the highest quality Bloody Mary mix on tap. I want it perfectly spiced, seasoned, and spiked! I want it ready to garnish!
You can make this mix the day before serving to let it chill and meld together in the fridge overnight, then you only have to worry about what food you’re serving the day of. Trust me, this is going to become your new go-to with the ingredients on hand so you can make it at a moment’s notice!
Bloody Mary Ingredients
Everyone has their favorite Blood Mary recipe – and I know I’m biased – but I think this one’s the best. I’ve done all the math + taste testing to supersize this recipe into a big batch, so make sure you check out the exact measurements in the recipe card below to get the proportions just right. Enjoy!
- Tomato juice
- Lemons – juiced
- Horseradish
- Worcestershire sauce
- Celery salt
- Garlic powder
- Tabasco sauce – or more to taste
- Vodka
When it comes to garnish for this cocktail, you can really go hog wild! My recommendations are bacon strips, celery strips, green olives, or lemon wedges. I have some more suggestions below, so keep reading!
How to Make Homemade Bloody Marys
Step 1: Blend Mixture
In a blender, or a large container, add tomato juice, lemons, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, garlic powder, and Tabasco. Blend or stir it together until the mixture is very smooth.
Step 2: Chill
Put the mixture in the fridge overnight or 2-3 hours before serving.
Step 3: Add Vodka and Serve
Add the vodka if you want the entire batch to be spiked, or serve it on the side with a jigger so people can either enjoy it as a mocktail or add their own 1.5-2oz of vodka in each serving of mix. Either way, enjoy it over ice.
Step 4: Garnish
Display your garnishes in small cups or bowls next to the serving vessel so guests can add their own toppings. Enjoy!
FAQs
Why do you put celery in a bloody mary?
Celery is such a popular garnish because it’s cooling and cleansing to contrast the spicy and all-consuming flavors of a Bloody Mary!
Why do Bloody Marys help hangovers?
So many reasons! The salt, vegetables, electrolytes, and vitamins to name a few, but I also think it’s a hangover cure because we believe it is (and because it tastes so dang good).
What kind of alcohol can you put in a bloody mary other than vodka?
I think vodka is the best choice for this cocktail, but tequila or gin are acceptable alternatives.
Serving Suggestions
This is where things get really fun!
- Garnishes have gotten wild lately and I’m honestly here for it. I’ll try anything on a Bloody Mary. Of course, there are the classic options like celery, bacon, olives, etc. But you can also add things like dill pickles, carrot spears, cheese, anything pickled, and shrimp cocktail. One of my favorites as of late is blue cheese stuffed olives!
- I love spice so tajin is a fun way to rim your glass. And if you like your Mary’s extra spicy, you can add a little bit of jalapeno juice instead of lemon.
- Seafood is a great addition to a drink like this, so sometimes I serve crab legs, oysters, or shrimp cocktail. I’ve even made a shrimp platter at past events.
- I always recommend serving some salty and crunchy snacks like chips and guacamole or queso!
- If this is a strict breakfast-y brunch, you can serve some chorizo breakfast tacos with your cocktails.
- You could go a step further and serve a combination of everything on a charcuterie board. Don’t want to go the whole way with a board? Serve all those flavors in one with these charcuterie bites.
