what is a hugo spritz?
A hugo spritz is a light, refreshing Italian cocktail made with elderflower liqueur, prosecco, fresh mint, fresh lime juice and ice. We drank many hugo spritzes in the Northern part of Italy (this is where they originated!).
The hugo spritz is often compared as a cousin spritz to the Aperol spritz. The aperol spritz has bold bitter orange notes where the hugo spritz is light, citrusy, herbaceous and slightly sweet.
hugo spritz ingredients:
So what’s in a hugo spritz you might ask?!
Hugo spritz ingredients are simple and fresh! Mint and lime are a match made in heaven, so make sure you have extra on hand so everyone can add more garnish to their individual drinks!
Here’s a list of everything you’ll need, but be sure to check out the recipe card for measurements.

- Elderflower liqueur – St. Germain is the most popular elderflower liqueur used in a traditional hugo spritz recipe
- Limes – for both juice and garnish.
- Prosecco – a dry, chilled prosecco works best because it balances out the sweetness of the elderflower liqueur
- Mint – fresh mint leaves are a must!
- Ice – I typically use crushed ice, but you can use what you have
what is the best prosecco for a hugo spritz?
The best prosecco for a hugo spritz is either a dry or extra-dry prosecco. Elderflower liqueur is a strong, sweet ingredient and an extra dry prosecco with balance the hugo spritz nicely. Avoid sweeter proseccos that can make the drink overly sweet.
How to Make a Big Batch Hugo Spritz

Top with two bottles of prosecco and mix together. Top the pitcher with a few cups of ice until it’s mostly full.

They’re like cousins! The Hugo is made with elderflower liqueur so it’s light and floral, while the Aperol spritz has a bitter flavor. Both have a liqueur and bubbles though.
Prosecco will aid better to the lightness of the cocktail. Save sparkling wine and champange for drinking on it’s own

Serving Suggestions
I imagine you’re serving this big batch at a girl’s night or a pool day, so here are some snackable bites that you can serve with your fresh cocktail!
- I love fun dips at a party so I think bruschetta dip or olive oil balsamic dip are a must!
- If you love something cheesy and bold I’d try the dill pickle cheeseball
- For something with more protein in it, I think a sea bass ceviche or lemon pepper wings would pair with your light and floral drink perfectly!
- Finally, this party calls for a summery sweet treat! Try this fruity summer berry trifle or my tried and true old fashioned peach cobbler
