Why You’ll Love This Cherry Vodka Sour

I love cherry cocktails in the summer because cherry has the benefit of being both fruit and almost candy-like at the same time. Adding cherry to a drink makes it delightfully sweet without being overpowering, and this Cherry Vodka Sour is no different.

This cocktail blends cherry sweetness with lemon juice for that cheek-pinching sour flavor, and the combination becomes lemonade-like. I can’t get enough! It’s light and refreshing for a hot summer’s day by the pool, and it’s a gorgeous pink-red color for a dinner party with your girls.

Ingredients

eggs, grenadine, lemons, cherries, vodka, and cherry juice

You only need 4 ingredients + an egg white to make this drink! The egg white adds frothiness and cuts some of the flavor (in a pleasant way), but you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to. Here’s the list of everything you’ll need!

  • Egg white
  • Vodka
  • Lemon juice
  • Cherry liquid (from Maraschino cherry jar)
  • Grenadine

Variations and Substitutions:

  • Garnish with cherries and lemon.
  • Make this drink a mocktail by swapping the vodka for sparkling water or soda.
  • Make your own cherry simple syrup instead of (or in addition to) using grenadine.
  • Add more or less lemon juice depending on how much you like the sour flavor. I always like more citrus, but you can tone it down if you want.
  • Don’t like the idea of an egg white? Swap it for aquafaba.

How To Make a Cherry Vodka Cocktail

add egg white and lemon juice

Step 1: Shake Ingredients

Add the egg white, vodka, lemon juice, cherry liquid, and grenadine to a shaker. Shake together without ice for 10-15 seconds so the egg white has a chance to foam.

Step 2: Add Ice

Add 1-2 scoops of ice and shake again for 15-20 seconds. Strain your cocktail with a Hawthorne strainer into the glass of your choice, then garnish with a cocktail pick skewered with maraschino cherries.

FAQs

can I use cherry vodka in this recipe?

You can swap regular vodka for cherry vodka if you want even more cherry flavor. I recommend pulling the cherry flavor directly from the maraschino cherry jar, but it’s up to you!

can I make my own cherry vodka?

Yes, it just takes time. Fill a jar about three-quarters of the way with cherries and then cover them with vodka. Put on the lid and store your jar in a dark place for at least a few weeks and at most a few months. Strain and enjoy!

what makes this cocktail sour?

The fresh lemon juice! It’s a 2:1 vodka to citrus ratio which gives this cocktail a good amount of mouth-puckering sour flavor.

Serving Suggestions

This is one of those drinks that has so much flavor – it goes down like water! Because of that, I suggest you serve some delicious food to help soak up the alcohol and allow you to enjoy even more of your cherry vodka sours!

Start with apps like hot honey whipped ricotta dip, goat cheese bruschetta, or charcuterie bites. Cheese pairs wonderfully with cherries! And speaking of cheese, I think something like this peach burrata salad would pair wonderfully with lemon pepper salmon to create a bright and flavorful main meal. Between the citrus and the cheese, you’ll cover all of your bases.

If you want something a little more filling, creamy lemon pasta is the answer to your prayers! And of course, we can’t forget dessert. Bring it all back to cherries with this classic cherry cobbler. Enjoy!
